◆ Different from the near-Gaussian pulse of the Q-switched laser, the MOPA pulse laser uses a pulse of approximate square wave. After amplification, due to gain saturation effect, the pulse shape of high front and low back will be formed, as shown in Fig. 1.
◆ For ideal square wave, pulse energy = peak power × pulse width.
◆ For deformed pulse, pulse energy and pulse half-height full width can still be used to estimate the peak power of laser pulse. When the peak power reaches a certain threshold value, such as the nonlinear self-focusing threshold of the material (usually several megawatts), it can be used to process some transparent brittle materials, such as quartz glass, sapphire, etc.

◆ For practical applications, the short-term and long-term stability of the laser needs constant attention. The short term can be considered in terms of seconds or minutes, while the long term is in terms of hours or days and months. Generally speaking, after setting the parameters and receiving the open light signal, the output pulse of MOPA laser can be stable within tens of microseconds of time, or even a few microseconds if the height of the first pulse is optimized. If the laser emits light continuously, the average power of the laser can be stabilized within a few minutes due to the slow thermal equilibrium process. Although the life of fiber laser is very long, but in the process of long years of work, with the aging of pump source chip, the growing damage of beam coupler and isolator and other devices, the laser may have about 5% of the normal power attenuation every year.
